Choosing the Right Size

To determine the correct size for your dog, we ask that you do the following measurements:
  1. Topline: Measure from the withers (above the front legs) to the base of the tail.

  2. Front Chest: Measure from the center of the dog's front leg, around the front of the chest to the center of the other front leg. This will determine how wide the front of the coat should be.

  3. Front Ribs: Measure around the dog's body at the largest part behind the front legs. This will determine how big around the coat needs to be.

  4. Behind Ribs: Measure around the dog's body just behind the rib bones. This will determine how big around the coat needs to be at the tuck up. Most dogs will be approximately the same as the measurement at the front ribs.
The numbers in the following chart will help you to determine which size will fit your dog best. Most of the sizes have a letter following the number. The descriptions below describe how these letter sizes are cut to best fit your type of dog.

  1. Regular Size: This size has no letter after the numbers. It is designed for a larger width, square dogs such as a Rottweiler, Am Staff, etc.

  2. "H" Hound size: This coat is cut slightly narrower across the front - for breeds such as the hounds, the retrievers, setters and the lighter boned dogs. Generally it fits a dog that does not have a distinct "tuck-up."

  3. "S" Sight hound size: These coats are narrow across the front but cut for a deep chest. They have a "tuck-up" cut into them so that the dogs with a deep chest and high tuck-up behind the ribs does not have a large amount of fabric to bunch up in this area. Most often they fit the sight hounds such as Whippets, Greyhounds, Borzoi, Saluki, as well as many of the setters and other breeds with a distinct tuck-up.

  4. "D" Deep Chest size: These sizes are cut slughtly broader across the front and one to three inches larger in the Front Rib measurement. This additional size is carried the full length of the dog's body. These are cut for the "barrel" shaped dogs such as the Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, Pugs, small Terriers and the Bulldogs.

  5. "L" Extra Length sizes: These sizes are cut up sharpely in the front so that the short legged dogs won't trip over the front of the coat when they run, as well as taking into consideration the longer barrel shaped bodies. These are used most often for dogs, such as the Dachshund, PBVG, Sky Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Corgi and Basset hounds.
